Duties of the MayorThe Mayor along with the alderpersons constitutes the City Council. The Mayor is not counted to determine if a quorum is present at Council meetings but may vote on an issue in the case of a tie vote between the alderpersons. The Mayor presides over the regular and special meetings of the Council. Regular meetings are scheduled for the first Thursday of the month, at 6:00 pm at the Council Chambers. The exception to this would be a legal holiday or upon unanimous approval of the entire Council and Mayor. The Mayor also has the authority to call special Council meetings by sending written notice to Council members 24 hours in advance of the meeting. The notices must be delivered personally by the Police Department. The Mayor has the authority to suppress disorderly conduct at meetings held in the Council chambers with the aid of the Police Chief or a police officer. Committee appointments by the Mayor are subject to the approval of two-thirds of the Council members present. The Mayor makes aldermanic appointments to all of the standing committees. The Mayor designates the Chair of the committee. The appointments are made prior to the regular Council meeting following the spring election. The Mayor serves as an ex-officio member of all committees. All aldermanic appointments whether required by state statute or city ordinance are made by the Mayor subject to approval by two-thirds of the Council members present. All aldermanic appointments are for a one year term. |
