It's purpose to provide Oconto County Residents with a means of transferring information about criminal activity to local law enforcement. In January of 1999 the name of the program was legally changed to Crime Stoppers of Oconto County. The purpose was to incorporate the entire county into the program. The information is transferred to Crime Stoppers via an unrecorded phone line. The information is then distributed to the proper agencies for action or investigation. If any information leads to the arrest of a perpetrator the caller is eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.00 RewardsThe rewards are determined by the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors. No law enforcement personell, attorney's, judges or any one else in the criminal justice system sit on this board. It is comprised of public spirited Oconto County residents. The reward is also paid by a board member. An appointment is made with the caller to make the payment in a public area, usually a shopping center parking lot. The caller is given a description of the board member and the members car. The caller has to make contact with the board member and give his crime stoppers ID number. The caller then receives CASH from the board member. FundingGillett Area Crime Stoppers funding comes from many different sources. Originally the program received grants from the State of Wisconsin. In 1994 the grants ceased and other sources had to be located. There have been a few fund-raisers over the years but most of the funding now comes from the Oconto County Circuit Court System. Circuit Court Judge Larry Jeske has generously ordered convicted felons to make donations to the Crime Stoppers Program. This practice is allowed under Wisconsin State Statutes. Other sources of funding have been private donations. How to get a RewardCall Crime Stoppers at 920-855-6789 or 800-322-0373.
