March
March seems to be a month of anticipation. We are waiting anxiously for spring. It may arrive on the calendar, but we all know that spring comes when it feels like it. We are gearing up for big changes in our local governments. We will elect a new mayor, make decisions about alderpersons and school board and other elections. And on top of all this we sit and look at the stack of papers that came to us and dread doing our taxes.
Coming up will also be the census. It is important that we all take a few moments and fill our the paperwork so an accurate count is made. But as with all things we need to be on our guard. There are those who will try and take advantage of the upcoming census. Legitimate workers may ask for the ages, genders, races, and other relivant information about everyone at a given address. Remember these points:
- Census workers will have identification a badge, bag & handheld device. If they don't show it, ask for it.
- Census workers may ask for salary range, but not Social Security, bank account, or Credit Card numbers, and will not ask for money, donations, etc..
- Census workers may call you or mail you, but will not e-mail you. If it's in your in-box, it's a scam. DO NOT click on a link supposedly sent to you for the census.
For more about the upcoming census and being on guard against scams, read the Better Business Bureau's Alert. Be cooperative, but cautious!

It's always a good idea to know what the road ahead has in store for you, check winter road conditions on DOT's website.
- The flu makes the news nearly nightly. The question that plauges every caregiver "when should I see the doctor" The CDC has recomendations and symptoms to watch for and how to take care of yourself or someone else with H1N1, or any flu for that matter. The Allergy and Asthma Network has a good list of supplies to have on hand, even if you don't have underlying health problems. Remember:
- No website takes the place of a medical professional. When in doubt, call. Especially if you are pregnant, nursing, the patient is very young, or has underlying health issues.
- Read all medication labels well. Don't accidentally double dose!
- Do not give asprin to anyone under 19.
- Wash your hands and cover your cough/sneeze.
- As the weather turns colder we hear our furnaces kick in and dread the day that the heat bill arrives in the mail. For many of us, the high bills are an inconvience. For others they choose between heat, food, or medicine. Here in Gillett our natural gas is supplied by WE Energies. If you or someone you know is facing such choices, or heating their home unsafely contact the fuel supplier to work out payment arrangements and/or WHEAP (Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program)

June 1, 2006 the new Booster Seat Law took effect. Children under 8 and less than 80 lbs and under 4' 9" MUST be in a booster seat. Visit the DOT for more information
Remember when you see a vehicle that has official business on the road side (tow truck, law enforcement, road construction workers, emergency personnel, utility repair) to slow down - move over - and give them a break. There is a State Law enforcing this
"The fine for violating this law is $243, and you will be assessed three demerit points. In addition, your driver's license will be suspended if you are involved in a crash, and you may serve up to seven years in prison if you hurt or kill someone." Visit the DOT's website for the full description or Wisconsin State Statutes Statute 346.072
